Michael Rault

"Crash! Boom! Bang!" CD

Chickadee

Genre: blues, folk-pop, pop

Edmonton, AB

Mar 13, 2009

Also on Indieville: Michael Rault selects his ten crucial records!

This sweet, bluesy romp is a fantastic little collection of tunes from Edmonton's Michael Rault. Each of these eight songs is a sunny, melodic pop number with a brilliant old-timey appeal. He respects the past, as evidenced by covers of Bo Diddley's "Pretty Thing," and Katie Webster's "After You Get Rid of Me". But he is also a keen songwriter, pulling off infectious ditties with a seemingly carefree ease ("Honey Bee," "Sidewinder"). His friendly voice is pleasingly unpretentious yet fluently skilled, picking a fine balance between intelligibility, energy, and tunefulness. If Crash! Boom! Bang! is anything to go by, Rault lives in a quaint and simple world where songs are short and catchy, and music is created to make you feel good. One whiff of the joyful charm of album highlight "I Want You For Mine" will be enough to make that fact adamantly clear.
