ill eagle

"Here's to Trying" CD

self-released

Genre: alternative rock, hardcore

London, Ontario

May 14, 2009

Yes, you read it right. Tragically, the band's name really is ill eagle.

And even worse, it turns out some bands really can be judged by their names. These folks make music that sounds exactly like the grungy "alternative rock" they grew up on. It isn't really my bag, but at least these fellows seem to know their way around a pop hook and are capable musicians to boot. Epic Evanescence-esque (minus screamy female vocals) "What a Wangled Teb We Weave" is the most memorable track on here, although hardcore "However" is more anthemic and "The Lucky Accountant" is more compositionally interesting.

This might be hot shit on the University of Western Ontario campus rock scene, but it's too generic to break into the Canada's metropolises. More originality and a name change should be high on ill eagle's to-do list. Until then, well, here's to trying...
