A Blossoming marks the birth of promising young Chicago label Aritao Records, an eclectic little imprint interested in all sorts of music, ranging from electro and IDM to math rock and shoegaze. This sampler offers a little taste of what's to come, and if it's any indication, there should be some interesting music emanating from these folks in the near future. Some of the most notable contributions on this disc are Emily Jane Powers' brand of electronic-tinged folk-pop, STAR's hazy shoegazer, and the serious electronic pop of Such, Broken Glass. There's also a lot of mediocre stuff on offer, from bland IDM courtesy of For Larousse to the tiresome electro-rock of The New Addiction and Switchblade Romance. As well, there are numerous more experimental artifacts that spark a bit of interest but fail to provide anything special or remain intriguing past one listen. Overall, though, this is mostly good stuff... for an eclectic, varied label sampler, A Blossoming does not disappoint.
