The April Skies

"Three Minute Singles" CDR EP

Self-released

Genre: indie pop

April 2006

I don't know much about this Norwegian fourpiece, but their mission statement is made pretty clear by the name of this self-produced CDR. The April Skies start this record off with the exactly three minute long title track, a burst of cheery indie pop straight from the Wedding Present songbook. "Rise & Rise Again" takes things a bit more lushly, stationing a jangly C86 guitar part in an uppity, carefree composition that is sure to squeeze a grin out of you. The under two minute "Heaven Knows It's Not Too Bad," meanwhile, is a zippy rocker, while the dreary yet epic "Not Your Baby" is a Brian Jonestown Massacre-esque demo tagged on for good measure. Ultimately these songs have a nice feel, harkening back to the early indie pop and C86 stage of musical development. The songs are catchy, with enough hooks to satisfy you - though at times I would become a tad bored by the formula. Good stuff, if mainly in anticipation of the band's bright future.
