"Payola" CD

Genres: indie pop, power pop, country- pop

Capital 8 is a four-piece band (like the Beatles!) out of Milwaukee who play country-tinged alternative pop music. Payola, their second album thus far, is a catchy nine track record that will make you smile and hum, but might leave you craving something a bit more... substantial.

It isn't that Capital 8's music isn't good. No, for pop music, it's fun and melodic and that's probably the most important thing. But, for some reason, there's a lack of deep hooks on Payola. There's plenty of melody, but nothing that grasps you right off the bat and moves you. A pop number like "Be Enough" has a nice, jumping guitar part and fun male/female vocals, but lacks the interminably infectious chorus it deserves. "Closer," which was apparently also on the band's first album (albeit in the form of a different version), is the closest the band gets to pegging something really memorable.

All in all, Payola is a fun, country-influenced alterna-pop record, but not one that will warrant a permanent spot in your stereo or your head.
