"Essential Dub" CD

ROIR USA

Genre: dub

August 2007

This solid if inevitably repetitive dub compilation is a very nice sampler for casual fans looking to explore ROIR's history with the genre. Like all good genre samplers, this provides a combination of both modern and older tracks - classics by Terrorists, Bad Brains, and Raz Michael & the Songs of Negus are slotted alongside more modern acts like Dub Trio, Bill Laswell, and 10 Foot Ganja Plant. The highlights are the originally white label track from Ras Michael & the Songs of Negus, the classic "Leaving Babylon" from Bad Brains, the thick dub of Alpha & Omega. Also noteworthy are the Terrorists (featuring Lee "Scratch" Perry and Roland Alphonzo) track and the feverishly melodic contribution by 10 Foot Ganja Plant. Of course, all of these songs are otherwise available on records put out by ROIR, but for an intro Essential Dub offers great bang for your buck.

Fun Fact: Not all that obscure, but ROIR = Reach Out International Records.
