There's something missing here. Night Light is by no
means a bad EP, but it's lacking a conclusive sound of its own; these
songs seem a bit anonymous and dull, never breaking out into true catchiness
and melody. Hitchhike come off as tentative and restrained
on these five songs - the technical details are solid, but there's a
lack of musical climaxes. "I'm Not Tired," for
example, is a perfectly serviceable pop/rock song, but its chorus
doesn't satisfy the build-up - I would have preferred a faster vocal
melody (more words, same instrumentation.) "It's Not You
and Me" has a similar problem; it never seems to reach a peak,
instead staying in a comfortable but unsatisfying melodic cycle.
"As It Is Said" is a bit more adventurous, but, as the last
song on this disc, it isn't enough to salvage this EP.
There's just some minor ingredient missing. Overall, this is a
pretty good CD; it simply sounds like it could have benefited from a
bit more time in the cooker. 72%
