Hoax Funeral

"Pour Away the Ocean" CD

Scared Crow

Genre: folk-pop, indie pop

June 2008

"Nice" would be an apt way to describe Hoax Funeral - this female-led fourpiece play lulling folk-pop reminiscent of a lusher and less dramatic version of Shearwater. As might be expected from an understated release such as this, the songs on Pour Away The Ocean can drag a bit.

Banjo-tinged "Amsterdam" is one of this record's strongest songs, due to its laidback but subtly dark demeanor; lovingly combining country tones with a familiar pop vibe, it makes for a fine piece of soft music. Also positive are pop nugget "Sleeping With Your Ghost," which has a slight Softies air to it, and sensitive acoustic strummer "Forest Road 1" .

This isn't music you really hum back to yourself after the fact, but it lovingly creates a feeling of familiarity in your head and occasionally garners a little bit of whistling along. Nice.
