Gavin Rossdale

"Wanderlust" CD

Interscope

Genre: alternative rock

July 4 2008

You can expect mainstream alternative rock from this ex-Bush frontman and husband to Gwen Stefani. Produced by Bob Rock, whose resume reads like a who's who of Billboard modern rock, the majority of Wanderlust's thirteen songs bleed hooks and macho-passionate vocals. The most able singles on this disc are "Can't Stop the World," "Drive," and "Love Remains the Same," the latter of which has already seen considerable radio airplay. Fun "Another Night on the Hills" also shows party-tune promise; it's the perfect accompanying piece for a beach blanket blow-out on any given primetime teen-soap. The rest of disc maintains the level of alt rock consistency you'd expect from a Bush alumnus, although "Future World" breaks the mold as a vague homage to Bob Rock's eighties background with the Payola$, and Imogen Heap-esque a capella number "This Place is on Fire" closes the record off on a strange note. Wanderlust is nothing groundbreaking, but it plays its part well.
