One Fluid Ounce

"Highlights" CDR

Self-Released

Genres: jam band

Jun 23 - 29 2003

One Fluid Ounce is a five-piece jam band from Golden, CO.  The five members are talented players, and their music reflects that in its tight instrumentation and solid songwriting.  Their brand of music isn't far off from that of The Greatful Dead and Phish.

One major downside to OFO's style is that it doesn't leave much room for variety.  While jam band fans won't have too much trouble appreciating the subtle differences that distinguish the songs from each other, those not attuned to the sound may find Highlights a bit repetitive.  The tracks rely on laidback grooves, and this makes them reminiscent of Phish's calmer material.  The best song on this 9-track disc is probably the rolling, almost spacey "Loud," which boasts a number of very impressive guitar solos and an infectious vocal part.  It would really be nice to hear it performed live.  "I Said She Said" is another catchy, spaced-out track that will catch you off-guard.

Altogether, this is a solid album from a quality jam band.  Those who don't like the genre won't be won over by this CDR, but jam fans will find a lot to like.

Look for OFO on tour through the Midwest this month and July.
