"Rock Reborn" CD

Diesel / Insound

Genres: indie rock, garage rock revival, rock

Sep 8 - 14 2003

A promotional co-release between clothing label Diesel and popular online indie distro Insound, Rock Reborn is a compilation of songs from the new group of indie rockers and garage revivalists that have recently hijacked the modern rock scene. Predictably, the now-overdone garage rock revival material is less enjoyable than the other parts of the disc. The Mooney Suzuki's repetitive, firey rock just doesn't seem to cut it anymore.

With that said, there's lots of good stuff on this compilation. It starts off with Rye Coalition, whose special brand of party rock is the perfect opener for a disc of this type. The universally acclaimed Blood Brothers also contribute a tune form their last album, and, as can be expected, it kicks serious ass. More rock explosiveness comes courtesy of Dance Disaster Movement, Whirlwind Chaos, and the brilliant Death From Above. Kinski, oddly enough, is also tapped for a piece of instrumental drone rock. Other notable inclusions are The Cinema Eye, Silvertide, Ted Leo/Pharmacists, Cave In, and the remarkably low-key Entrance.

All in all, Rock Reborn is a fun but cruelly merciless sample of some of the most energetic and explosive indie rock around today.
