Tiff Jimber

"Obstacles" CD

Cormac Records

Genres: singer / songwriter, pop

July 18 - 24 2005

"She's Scrumptulescent" brags the press release to Tiff Jimber's Obstacles record. Perhaps so, but this collection of singer/songwriter piano pop songs wears a bit thin. Fiona Apple is an appropriate point of comparison, though Jimber's songs aren't quite as successful. These ten ballads do house some nice melodies and a host of pleasant if unspectacular lyrics about love and similarly sappy stuff. This isn't my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the songwriting skill - I do find, however, that some of Obstacles' songs wear a bit thin as the album drags on - most of the tracks start with really promising hooks, but often fail to live up to their opening lines. It could be the lite rock production and the overly inoffensive songs, which strive for accessibility but end up a bit too soft. Overall, this is a decent record for Tiff Jimber, but it's not quite engaging enough for my taste.
