Velapene Screen

"Medical Breaths" CD

Frozen Empire Media

Genres: IDM, electronica

Velapene Screen is a standard IDM/electro act on the Frozen Empire Media label, drawing influences from usual sources like Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Plaid.  Indeed, this sounds like it could be a mid/late-90s Warp release.  It's got the beats and synths; all that's lacking is the freshness.  That isn't to say Medical Breaths can't be enjoyed, however - "Even Bad Is Good" is an enjoyable manipulation of an infectious vocal sample, while "Devious Little Dustball" is both slippery and intensely driving.  Blast this record loud, and it makes for a uniformly impressive electronic album.  Fans of IDM take note - this may not reinvent the genre, but it serves to perpetuate a damn good thing.
